Cookery & Kitchen Skills
Cooking offers our attendees the opportunity to gain new skills. Chopping, stirring, and measuring improves dexterity and coordination whilst also being a therapeutic activity that reduces anxiety and stress. It also engages multiple senses, providing a rich sensory experience. In addition, our attendees also get the opportunity to cook with ingredients produced right here on the farm, reinforcing our ‘farm to fork’ ethos.
Cookery & Kitchen Skills – Learning, Creating, and Enjoying Food
At Oldbury Cottage Care Farm, our Cookery & Kitchen Skills sessions offer a hands-on experience where attendees can develop essential life skills, build confidence, and enjoy the process of creating delicious meals. Cooking is not just about preparing food—it’s about learning, teamwork, creativity, and connection.
A Hands-On Learning Experience
Our sessions provide a welcoming and supportive space for attendees to:
🔪 Develop Practical Skills – Learn chopping, stirring, measuring, and safe food handling techniques.
🍳 Gain Confidence in the Kitchen – Work independently or as part of a team to prepare meals.
👃 Engage the Senses – Experience different textures, smells, and tastes, making cooking a sensory-rich activity.
🩷 Reduce Anxiety & Improve Wellbeing – The rhythmic actions of cooking can be calming and therapeutic.
From Farm to Fork
A key part of our approach is reinforcing our ‘farm to fork’ ethos, allowing attendees to cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients grown right here on the farm. This helps them understand where food comes from and appreciate the benefits of using local, homegrown produce.
🥕 Harvesting fresh vegetables – Picking ingredients straight from the garden.
🍞 Creating wholesome meals – Using simple, nutritious recipes to develop healthy eating habits.
👩🍳 Cooking for the community – Sharing meals and learning about food sustainability.
A Fun & Social Experience
Cooking together is a fantastic way to foster friendships, encourage teamwork, and build communication skills. Whether it’s baking bread, preparing soups, or making homemade jams, our kitchen is a place where attendees can learn, laugh, and enjoy the rewards of their hard work.
By developing cookery and kitchen skills, attendees gain valuable independence, improved self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment, all while enjoying the joy of food.
